I will not go in the constant debate over whether they were brothers, friends or lovers, nor on whether there actually were other literary or cristianismo.Se the other two are known as potential martyrs executed by the Emperor Maximian also. The only thing that is certain is that John Boswell, Yale University, points out the importance that his cult had during the Middle Ages the rite of environment adelphopoiesis.

The adelphopoiesis, fraternitas iurata or "ordo ad fratres faciendum" is a ceremony practiced by many Christian churches during the Middle Ages and early modern period in Europe to unite people of the same sex (usually men). Comes from the Greek Adelphopoiesis ἀδελφός (adelphos) "brother" and ποιῶ (poio) "I do", literally "make brothers and sisters."

John Boswell has pointed out dozens of original manuscripts, which have double the religious rituals performed during the Middle Ages by Catholic and Orthodox priests within the church to consecrate marriages between same sex, but it was a private agreement between two men in sacred enclosure.

To reach their conclusions Boswell visited all the great libraries of Europe, including the Vatican, where he found many of his manuscripts. As a result got 80 original manuscripts of gay wedding ceremonies, which was invoked as protectors of Saints Sergius and Bacchus.

Weddings in the Middle Ages not as a priest celebrating today, the two married people who would read the commitment of union and then the priest blessed or performed before the altar and proclaimed to the community. This painting clearly reflects this union, in this case sanctified by Jesus himself (center, above both). Found in the Temple of Santa Catalina (Mount Sinai), is currently at the National Museum in Kiev.

Their relationship has been considered as an example of homosexual couples the principle of Christianity, reflecting the tolerance of homosexuality of the early Christians in this age are often indicated as "erastai" (lovers). Extension of the rite of burial testify adelphopoiesis English and Irish, in which you can find numerous graves with the names of two men. Registration is often a sign of affection that had "Love united in life. The earth to one in death. "

The cult of Sergius and Bacchus is also reflected in the numerous temples that were held in his honor, Istanbul (now mosque, pictured above), Rome and Acre are examples.
